Plarion is currently working on an FP6 Integrated Project “ProTeM”. This is an EU 10 million Euro funded project to develop AFM like probe writing technology for archival data storage.
Partners include IBM Zurich, Numonyx, LETI, RWTH, Exeter Uni, Twente Uni
The projects goals are to develop the technological basis for a 20TB “shoebox sized” archive device with 1-2 Terabytes per square inch data density. For comparison, Hard disk drives area now about 0.2-0.3 Terabytes per square inch.
The project requires R&D in the following areas, amongst others
- long product life development
- low wear probe and film technologies
- carbon and phase change materials development
- read channel technology for massively parallel channels
Plarion contributes in the project as;
- archival data storage expert partner
- inorganic "phase change" sample manufacturing and thin film coating expertise provider
- tip wear and sample life testing partner with conductive AFM expertise
- exploitation manager and IP partner
